A young carer is someone under 18 who is caring for a relative with a disability, illness, mental health condition or drug or alcohol problem. They often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. Young carers usually look after one of their parents, or care for a brother or sister. Young carers may do extra jobs in and around the home, such as cooking, cleaning, shopping or helping someone get dressed and move around. Along with providing this help, young carers may also give emotional support to others in the household too.
